Dear Families:
First Grade is an exciting year for your child. Many new things to learn, explore and enjoy. I am looking forward to getting to know your child; their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses.
About me:
This is my 20th year teaching in Cranston Public Schools. I have taught First Grade for eighteen of those years. I am married with two sons, Michael and Steven. In June 2019 I became a grandmother! I grew up on Long Island and attended the University of Rhode Island. I hold both Early Childhood and Elementary School Teaching Certificates.
About our routines:
Lunch is at 11:35; the menu goes home at the beginning of the month and is available on the CPS website. Your child will have the opportunity to have a snack in the afternoon. Snacks should be healthy; fruit, popcorn, pretzels, cheese and crackers etc. Please do not send in candy, nuts or peanut butter as we are a nut free school. If you would like your child to have a drink they can bring either a water bottle or juice. Soda is not allowed and glass bottles are not allowed.
Each day your child will bring home their communication folder. This will contain information from school. Please check this folder nightly.
On Fridays your child will bring home some of their completed work. Please review this work with your student. This work is for you to keep unless I have written a note on it that it needs to be returned to school. Please sign the Friday Folder as indicated and return on Monday. This lets me know you have seen your child's work and are aware of their progress.
For the first few weeks of school in reading, we will be reviewing sight vocabulary and learning the routines for the reading series. When we begin the reading series I will notify you as your child will have spelling words to practice nightly and a spelling test each Friday.
In math your child can practice the skills we are learning in class on IXL. At the beginning of each new module I will send home the IXL topics that support that module. I will also send home your student's user and password id as soon as it is available.
In science we will be following the NGSS, (Next Generation Science Standards), and using an online program called STEMSCOPES to support our learning.
In social studies each trimester we will focus on one or two topics.
As you can see, we will have a lot going on in First Grade this year. I look forward to working with you and your child to make this an amazing year!
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at [email protected] or you can call the school to make an appointment. Thank you in advance for all your support.
